The GCC Metro Center I II III Cinemas were located inside the Metro Center Mall adjacent to the food court, cocktail bar and ice skating rink on the second floor. It was operated by GCC from 1974, until Harkins purchased the theaters in 1993, and expanded the screens to twelve.

The mall itself was opened for business in October 1973, and when it opened as the first two-level, five-anchor mall in the U.S., it was the largest shopping center in Arizona and was considered one of the largest shopping centers in the United States.

The mall had an ice skating rink across from the cinemas on the ground level overlooked by a bar built to resemble the fuselage of an airliner. The rink and MetroCenter can still be seen in their heyday in the 1989 film Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, which was filmed inside the mall.

Metrocenter also featured the interesting concept of a “mini mall within a mall” called The Alley, housing a dozen or so specialty boutiques. It’s interior alleyway made a shortcut diagonal from one mall corner to another.

Because of its exterior street set up size and resemblance to a small town, youth started cruising around the mall, driving their cars around the property, blocking traffic and entering the mall with no intention of patronizing businesses.

Arizona's only Amusement park and large scale arcade , Castles N' Coasters (Formerly Golf 'N Stuff), also circles the outskirts of the mall. It opened in 1976.
