Hugh Cecil as a Transylvanian

Hugh Cecil (May 16, 1913 – February 11, 2004) was an English actor, most recognized for his part as the monocle wearing, bald Transylvanian in The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Born as Alfred Cecil Ware in Hackney, London, Hugh Cecil was a British actor, magician and Punch and Judy performer. He was a member of the world-renowned organization the Magic Circle for over 70 years, and elected to the Inner Magic Circle. As an actor, Cecil appeared in several British television shows, and was seen in several television commercials and music videos as well.

Cecil was registered with the U.G.L.Y. Agency, a service that that specified in unique looking character actors. Cecil had contracted Alopecia in the 1950s, and lost all his hair (including his eyebrows) which gave him a unique look that helped him get many character roles. It was through U.G.L.Y. that Cecil was chosen to be in The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Jim Sharman chose him (and a few of the other Transylvanians) from photographs the agency provided, and he him meet at the Kings Road Theater with others the Agency provided. Although Cecil could not dance, he was still approved for the six-week gig. Cecil wore his own monocle in the film.

Cecil was a fan of American cars, and in his collection was an AMC Matador that had previously been seen in the James Bond film The Man With The Golden Gun. His son, Neville Ware, is a radio personality and an actor, who appeared in Dr Who among other things.
