History

The Roxy Theatre is a world famous nightclub owned by Lou Adler, located on the world-famous Sunset Strip West in Hollywood, CA. The Roxy was opened on September 23, 1973, by Elmer Valentine and Lou Adler, along with original partners David Geffen, Elliot Roberts and Peter Asher. In its early days, the Roxy hosted both music and cabaret acts. After seeing The Rocky Horror Show in London, Lou Adler brought the show to his club.

The American production of The Rocky Horror Show with the Roxy Cast debuted March 21, 1974 and starred an imported Tim Curry as Dr. Frank N Furter along with a new, local cast. The Rocky Horror Show played at the Roxy for nine months to great success, spawning the Lou Adler-produced Roxy Cast soundtrack LP before moving to the Belasco Theatre on Broadway. Midway though its run, Singer/Songwriter ("It's Raining Men")/Actor ("Thank God It's Friday") Paul Jabara took over the role of Frank N Furter when Tim Curry, along with Roxy original, Meat Loaf, went to England to film The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

The very first Rocky Horror costume contest was held at The Roxy Theater on October 31, 1974.

During the run of The Rocky Horror Show, a scene was filmed at the Roxy for the 1974 David Essex film Stardust where the poster can be seen inside the theater. Essex's character is also seen driving up the Sunset Strip past Tiffany Theater, which later became a major venue for The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

In 1978, Tim Curry returned to The Roxy for the start of his Read My Lips tour, playing six shows on July 14, 15 and 16 in support of his debut album.
A year later, Tim played two shows at the Roxy on August 26, 1979 in support of his Fearless album.
