History
Located at 2230 North Farwell Avenue The Oriental Theater in Milwaukeewas until June of 2018 was the longest continuously running location for The Rocky Horror Picture Show, with it’s first weekly showing on January 7, 1978.
The ornate movie house was built and opened in 1927 with East Indian décor, and not Asian, as one would expect. It wasdesigned by Gustave A. Dick and Alex Bauer and features 2 minaret towers, 3 stained glass chandeliers, several hand drawn murals, 6 bigger-than-life Buddhas, dozens of original draperies, 8 porcelain lions, and hundreds of elephants.
Operated by Landmark Theatres for 42 years, the theater temporarily closed on June 21, 2018 to make way for a new owner, Milwaukee Film. After theatre renovations, the most recent cast, Sensual Daydreams resumed performing once a month on the second Saturday, beginning December 14, 2018 and celebrated with a 41st Anniversary show on January 12, 2019.
