Educated at the Sorbonne in Paris, and went to work as a Wall Street runner in New York in the '50s. After taking an interest in theatre, he spent five years as assistant to Sir Peter Daubeny at the World Theatre in London. At 26, White produced his first West End play, a production of Jack Gelber's The Connection. His first major success was the 1970 West End production of Housewife, Superstar, starring Barry Humphries. He next produced Sleuth on Broadway and a long-running version of Oh! Calcutta! on the West End.

He passed on March 7, 2016 of heart failure, aged 80. On March 9, 2016, the front house-lights were dimmed on the West End in his honor.
